The importance of Voter Engagement
Voter engagement of Canadians has been on a steady decline since the 1990’s. Last summer I started investigating voter turnout within Canada as a Data Science project and discovered not only a wealth of hidden data but a disturbing truth. At the Federal level voter turnout could range from the mid 70’s to less than 40%. Even worst, there is often a 20% difference between adjacent Electoral Districts.

This is a major undertaking and while I have started to compile some key data points I am nowhere near a usable portal. Since we have just entered into one of the most important Federal Elections of our time I have decided it would be better to make this information available in some form. Using the public data from Elections Canada I have compiled detailed data points for each of the individual polls by Electoral Districts for the last 3 Federal Elections.
I am offering a copy of a formatted Excel file containing Pivot tables and the 2 csv files used to create the file. The csv files can be imported into Google Sheets or other software for analysis if you do not have access to Excel.
By purchasing a copy of each set of files you will assist me in funding my goal of creating a web portal to ensure this data can be easily accessed by anyone.
Unless you deal with this type of data on a regular basis it may be difficult to understand and how to use it.
To the left you will see the formatted Excel file which uses a Pivot table. The view can be adjusted by selecting the year or moving the “year” field to a column within the Pivot table.
I have included all 3 files for Nunavut as it had the lowest turnout during the 2021 election.
